In 2024, the Czech Republic will have 1.1GWh of installed energy storage, ranking fourth in Europe! And it is expected to grow steadily in the coming years!
01 Household storage dominates
The Czech Republic is dominated by household storage, with an installed capacity of about 1.06 GWh in 2024, accounting for 97% of the total energy storage market! With continuous financial support, the Czech Republic has a storage allocation rate of more than 90%, leaving other European countries “in the dust”.
The new Green Investments Programme will continue to drive the growth of household storage in the Czech Republic. The program covers a wide range of electrification solutions, including photovoltaics, heat pumps and charging stations. All of these will involve distribution storage.
In addition, the Czech residential electricity price is the highest in Europe! The price in April 2024 is 38 €/kWh, which is much higher than the European average (24 €/kWh)!
02 Commercial, industrial and large storage have not taken off yet
Commercial, industrial and large storage have not yet taken off in the Czech Republic. In 2024, commercial, industrial and large storage will account for only 1% and 2% of the energy storage market, respectively, which is almost negligible compared to household storage.
The Czech Republic expects to expand C&I and large storage in the coming years, but there is still a lack of clear legal support. Some binding rules also limit the benefits of large storage. A storage system 75% charged from PV or wind can only participate in electricity ancillary services. In addition, prices are cheaper in neighboring countries, which makes large storage in the Czech Republic uncompetitive for ancillary services.
03 Outlook 2025-2028
In 2024, the Czech Republic accounted for 5% of the overall European energy storage market. In 2025, it is expected to grow slightly, with an installed capacity of 1.2 GWh. Household storage is expected to grow slightly, with an installed capacity of around 1.15 GWh, accounting for 96% of the total. Commercial and industrial storage 12MWh, accounting for 1%. The installed capacity of large storage is about 36MWh, accounting for 3%.
